John Harvey is one of the key enthusiasts of the evolving creation of virtual realities. He has authored this podcast. Because of COVID 19 the in person Burning Man could not be held. Using an Oculus Quest 2 headset he participated in the 2020 virtual Burning Man and details that transformative experience. The Oculus Quest 2 headset has 6 degrees of freedom and two hand interface controllers that make the experience very immersive for one week. John, in a recent interview he conducted said, “ Over the years, I have spent a lot of time and money chasing after that perfect VR experience. This included building one of the first VR art galleries for Apple Computer's eWorld in the eighties. Since then, I have experimented with the various iterations of virtual reality including the cardboard headsets. I was not impressed. Now 17 years later I passionately believe that VR is here because of the Oculus Quest headset. Released in 2019, by Facebook, the Oculus Quest is an untethered headset that has a vivid display, and by providing six degrees of freedom, movement is fluid. It is a total game-changer in my opinion.
Since purchasing my Oculus Quest headset (HMD) I have looked at several games, but nothing has caught my fancy. For those of you into games, I expect the Quest will provide you with hours of breath-taking entertainment. VR is so much more than games, however.
It was not a game that caught my attention but rather an application called TRIPP®. TRIPP® (https://www.tripp.com/ ) provides me with a daily visual meditation, that has had a profound impact on my mental wellbeing. I then discovered WITHIN, a VR portal hosted by the Oculus Store that features various artists, and it was there that I found one of the most inspirational works of art that I have ever seen. A work that I will forever hold in the same place as productions such as The Wall by Pink Floyd. That work is Conscious Existence by Marc Zimmermann. Conscious Existence takes one on a journey within. A journey that I have found very therapeutic—the hundreds of times that I have experienced it.
